Hollow Metal Door Frames

How to select the right commercial steel door frame for your application.

Hollow metal door frames are the most commonly used and the most versatile commercial door frames available.  Preferred for their rigid strength, resistance to fire and ability to be customized, steel door frames are used in all applications ranging from heavy industrial manufacturing facilities to high end hotels and offices.  Standard hollow metal door frames are constructed from 16 gauge roll form steel but can also be manufactured in 14 gauge or 12 gauge metal thicknesses.  Hollow metal frames are available with a wide range of anchoring options to accommodate varying wall conditions and can be used with steel doors or commercial wood doors.

Hollow Metal Frame Applications for Existing Openings:
1. Slip On “KD” Drywall Frames
2. Flush Mount Frames with Punch & Dimple Anchors

Hollow Metal Frame Applications for New Construction (Installed While Walls Are Being Built)
3. New Masonry Walls
4. New Stud Walls

1. Slip On “KD” Drywall Frames
Slip on “KD” (knocked down) drywall frames are meant to wrap a finished wall and require only minimal anchoring. Slip on “KD” drywall frames are stabilized by sill anchors at the bottom of the frame and compression anchors on the upright legs. This 3 piece frame is usually easy to install and is very strong since part of the wall fits inside of the frame throat.

Rough Opening Requirements:
Nominal Door Width + 2”
Nominal Door Height + 1”

Example: 36″ x 80″ Nominal Door Width = 38″ x 81″ Rough Opening

Overall Frame Depth vs. Throat Size
Throat / wall size is 1” less than overall frame size

Example: 4-7/8” walls require a 5-7/8” frame size.

*Note: Slip on KD drywall frames cannot be factory welded. Refer to Section 4: New Stud Walls if welded drywall frames are specified.

2. Flush Mount Frames with Punch & Dimple Anchors
Flush mount frames with punch & dimple anchors mount flush against a wood stud or masonry wall and are fastened with
masonry expansion bolts (sleeve anchors) or lag screws.

Rough Opening Requirements
Door Width + 4″ Minimum (Add 3/16″ to 1/4″ for Easier Installation)
Door Height + 2” Minimum (Add 1/8″ to 3/16″ for Easier Installation)

Overall Frame Depth vs. Wall Size
Flush mount commercial steel door frames with punch & dimple anchors should be equal or less than the wall thickness. The most common sizes are 5-3/4” or 7-3/4”. These frames do not wrap the wall, instead they fit inside the opening.

3. Hollow Metal Frames for New Masonry Walls
New masonry walls typically require masonry wire anchors or masonry T strap anchors. Masonry wire & T-strap anchors are loose anchors that are not fastened to the frame but fit tightly inside of the frame return. On a block wall the wire or T-strap anchor is placed in the mortar between several layers of block. Most frames use (4) wire or T strap anchors per side. Floor base anchors are also used to fasten the frame to the floor. Anchors for poured walls function the same but instead of placing a wire anchor between layers of block, the wire anchor is wrapped around rebar. The frame is then stabilized and held in place with 2 x 4’s until the concrete forms are removed. When the concrete is poured the door frame is back-filled with concrete and formed into the wall.

4. Hollow Metal Door Frames for New Stud Walls
Universal stud anchors attach to both wood and metal studs. Frames using universal stud anchors are meant to be installed during the wall framing stages. Door frames must be installed before the drywall is hung. After the door frame is anchored to the studs, the drywall is slid inside the frame return. Universal stud anchors are typically sold as a loose anchor that snaps into the frame throat but options for welded in anchors are available.
