Surface Material
Wood Fire Rated Door Surfaces
Hardboard – A smooth, durable wood-fiber face material commonly used on fire-rated commercial wood flush doors intended to receive a field-applied painted finish. The surface material is compatible with fire rated doors when incorporated into a properly tested and labeled door assembly.
Primed Hardboard – A hardboard face material supplied with a factory-applied primer, providing a uniform, paint-ready surface for field-applied finish coatings on fire-rated doors.
Birch – A natural wood veneer available in stain-grade or prefinished options, featuring a fine, generally uniform grain and light coloration. Commonly selected for fire-rated commercial wood doors requiring a clean architectural appearance.
Oak – A natural wood veneer available in stain-grade or prefinished options, characterized by its prominent grain pattern and traditional appearance. Red oak and white oak are commonly specified for fire-rated door applications.
Maple – A natural wood veneer with a light color and fine, subtle grain, available in stain-grade or prefinished options. Provides a clean, contemporary appearance for fire-rated wood doors.
Cherry – A natural wood veneer available in stain-grade or prefinished options, recognized for its warm reddish-brown coloration and smooth, refined grain. Cherry typically deepens in color with age and exposure to light, providing a distinctive architectural appearance.
Walnut – A premium natural wood veneer available in stain-grade or prefinished options, featuring rich brown coloration and distinctive grain patterns. Often selected for higher-end architectural applications requiring a refined appearance.
Mahogany – A natural wood veneer available in stain-grade or prefinished options, generally characterized by warm reddish-brown coloration and relatively straight, attractive grain. Provides a classic architectural appearance and is offered in fire rated options.
MDO (Medium-Density Overlay) – A smooth, resin-impregnated face material designed to provide a stable, uniform substrate for high-quality painted finishes. MDO may be used on fire-rated commercial wood flush doors when specified as part of a tested and labeled door assembly.
High-Pressure Decorative Laminate (HPDL) – A durable decorative surface, often referred to as “plastic laminate,” available in solid colors, patterns, and wood-grain designs. HPDL provides a resilient, easy-to-maintain finish for fire-rated doors when incorporated into a properly rated door assembly.
Metal Fire Rated Door Surfaces
Cold-Rolled Steel (CRS)
Cold-rolled steel is smooth, uncoated sheet steel commonly used for interior commercial doors and frames. It provides an excellent surface for painting but has less corrosion resistance than galvanized or galvannealed steel, making it best suited for dry, climate-controlled environments where a fire rated door is required.
Galvanized Steel
Galvanized steel is coated with zinc to provide increased protection against rust and corrosion. It is well suited for exterior openings, humid environments, and other locations where fire protection and moisture exposure is a concern. Its zinc-rich surface typically requires appropriate preparation before field painting.
Galvannealed Steel
Galvannealed steel receives a zinc coating that is heat-treated to create a zinc-iron alloy at the surface. It combines excellent corrosion resistance with a surface that is particularly well suited for painting, making it a popular choice for fire rated doors.
Stainless-Steel
Stainless steel provides excellent corrosion resistance, durability, a clean architectural appearance, and a high resistance to heat and flames. It is commonly used for commercial doors in hospitals, laboratories, food service facilities, coastal areas, and other high-traffic, sanitary, or moisture-prone environments.

What fire ratings are available for fire rated doors?
Fire rated doors are available in several rating levels. Commercial steel fire doors can be listed up to 3 hours, while commercial wood fire doors are commonly available through 90 minutes, depending on the construction and manufacturer. Common rating categories include 20, 45, 60, and 90 minutes, with 180-minute ratings used on qualifying steel assemblies. The required rating comes from the rated wall or barrier and the applicable building code, not from a general preference for a higher-rated door.
How do I determine the required rating for fire rated doors?
Start with the project door schedule, life-safety plans, wall type, and the adopted building code. The required fire-door rating is tied to the construction in which the opening is located. A higher rating is not automatically interchangeable with the specified opening because glass, hardware, temperature-rise criteria, smoke protection, and other listing conditions may differ. For existing buildings, the labels on the current door and frame can provide useful information, but the intended assembly still needs to meet the current project requirements.
Do fire rated doors need a labeled frame and fire-rated hardware?
A fire-rated opening is evaluated as an assembly, not as a door leaf by itself. The frame must be appropriate for the required rating, and hardware used on the opening must be listed or otherwise permitted for the application. Depending on the opening, that may include listed hinges, latching hardware, closers, exit devices, coordinators, gasketing, and other components. The exact requirements vary with the rating, door configuration, occupancy, and listing, so the safest approach is to coordinate the complete opening before ordering.
Can fire rated doors have glass?
Yes, many fire rated doors can include listed fire-protection or fire-resistance-rated glazing, but the allowable glass type, exposed area, lite dimensions, and location depend on the door rating and the applicable listings. A standard tempered-glass lite used in a non-rated door cannot simply be substituted into a fire-rated opening. When glass is required, specify the desired vision-lite size and rating early so the door, glazing frame, glass, and label can be supplied as a compatible configuration.
Can fire rated doors have louvers?
Some fire rated doors can be supplied with listed fusible-link louvers, but fire-rated louver applications are restricted. The allowable rating, louver size, location, door type, and interaction with glass or exit hardware are controlled by the product listings and code requirements. Certain fire-door configurations do not permit louvers at all. If ventilation is required through a rated opening, identify that requirement before the door is ordered so the proposed louver can be checked against the complete assembly.
Can fire rated doors be used in pairs?
Yes, many fire rated doors are available as pairs, but paired fire doors require more coordination than two single leaves placed side by side. Meeting-stile construction, astragals, coordinators, flush bolts, exit devices, latching, closers, and any required gasketing must match the listed configuration. Some hardware arrangements are not available at every rating or door size. For pairs, submit the full opening width, handing or active leaf, hardware set, and required rating with the quote request.
Can I replace only the door leaf in a the required fire-rated opening?
Sometimes, but the replacement leaf has to be compatible with the existing frame, hardware, rating, and opening configuration. Record the labels on the existing door and frame, the exact leaf dimensions, hinge and lock locations, handing, undercut, and hardware before ordering. A new labeled door does not automatically make an older opening compliant if the frame, hardware, field modifications, or installation conditions do not meet the requirements of the assembly. Replacement work should be evaluated as an opening, not just a slab.
What hardware can be used on fire rated doors?
The hardware depends on the opening function and listing, but fire-rated doors commonly use listed hinges or pivots, positive-latching locksets or exit devices, and self-closing or automatic-closing hardware where required. Pairs can add coordinators, flush bolts, or specific exit-device arrangements. Electrified hardware, continuous hinges, concealed closers, and access-control components may also be possible when the door and frame are properly prepared. Hardware should be selected before fabrication so reinforcements, machining, and labels remain coordinated.
Are custom sizes available for fire rated doors?
Yes, custom sizes are available for many fire rated doors, but maximum width, height, pair dimensions, lite sizes, hardware preparations, and construction vary by manufacturer and rating. A door that is available in a large non-rated size may have a smaller maximum size once a fire label is required. For oversized or unusual openings, confirm the dimensions, frame, rating, hardware, and glazing requirements before finalizing the design or ordering replacement material.
What affects the price of fire rated doors?
The cost of fire rated doors depends on the door material, rating, size, frame, hardware, glazing or louver requirements, pair configuration, machining, finish, and freight. Higher ratings or specialty configurations can narrow the available constructions and increase cost, but the rating alone is not the whole price. For a useful quote, provide the required rating together with the opening dimensions, frame or wall information, hardware set, and any glass, louver, or access-control requirements so the complete assembly can be priced on the same basis.
