Surface Material

Commercial Wood Door Surface Materials

Hardboard – A smooth, durable wood-fiber face material commonly used on commercial wood doors that will receive a field-applied painted finish.

Primed Hardboard – A hardboard face supplied with a factory-applied primer, providing a uniform surface ready for field-applied finish paint.

Birch – A natural stain grade or prefinished wood door with a fine, generally uniform grain and light coloration that provides a clean architectural appearance.

Oak – A natural stain grade or prefinished wood door distinguished by its prominent grain pattern and traditional appearance, available in species such as red and white oak.

Maple – A stain grade or prefinished natural wood door with a light color and fine, subtle grain that creates a clean, contemporary appearance.

Cherry – A stain grade or prefinished natural wood veneer door known for its warm reddish-brown tones and smooth, refined grain that typically darkens with age and light exposure.

Walnut – A premium stain grade or prefinished wood door featuring rich brown coloration and distinctive grain patterns for an upscale architectural appearance.

Mahogany – A natural stain grade or prefinished wood door characterized by warm reddish-brown coloration and generally straight, attractive grain for a classic architectural appearance.

MDO – Medium-density overlay is a smooth, resin-impregnated surface designed to provide a stable, uniform substrate for high-quality painted finishes.

High-Pressure Decorative Laminate – Often referred to as “plastic laminate” HDPL is a durable decorative surface that is available in solid colors, patterns, and wood-grain designs.

Wood Veneer Grades

Grade A: A high-quality architectural veneer grade that provides an attractive, consistent appearance while allowing limited natural characteristics and manufacturing tolerances..

Grade AA: A premium architectural veneer grade with more restrictive appearance requirements than Grade A, providing superior consistency in color and grain.

Stain Grade & Prefinished Wood Door Veneer Cuts

Plain Sliced: The most common veneer cut, producing a familiar cathedral grain pattern with natural variation that works well for a wide range of commercial wood doors. Commonly specified with red oak, white oak, cherry and maple doors.

Quarter Sliced: The wood veneer is sliced perpendicular to the growth rings, producing a relatively straight, consistent grain pattern with a clean architectural appearance. Commonly specified with mahogany and walnut doors.

Rift Cut: The veneer is cut at an angle to the growth rings to produce a tight straight grain pattern with minimal flake. Commonly specified with oak doors.

Rotary Cut: The wood veneer peeled continuously from a rotating log, creating broad, varied grain patterns while maximizing veneer yield for an economical natural wood surface. Commonly specified with natural birch or white birch doors.

Stain Grade & Prefinished Wood Door Veneer Matching

Book Match: Alternating veneer leaves are opened like the pages of a book, creating adjacent grain patterns that mirror one another across the door face.

Slip Match: Consecutive veneer leaves are laid side by side in the same orientation, producing a repeating grain pattern with a more uniform appearance.

Random Match: Veneer leaves are assembled without intentionally matching the grain from one leaf to the next, creating a varied, natural appearance across the door face.

Running Match: Consecutive veneer leaves of equal width are applied across the door face, with the outer leaves trimmed as needed to fit the door width.

Balance Match: Veneer leaves are sized to equal widths so the door face has a symmetrical, balanced arrangement from one edge to the other.

Center Balance Match: An even number of equal-width veneer leaves are arranged symmetrically around the centerline of the door for a highly uniform architectural appearance.

Pair Match: Veneer is selected and arranged so adjacent doors in a pair have a coordinated grain pattern and appearance, creating visual continuity across the opening.

What are commercial wood doors used for?

Commercial wood doors are widely used for interior commercial openings where durability and architectural appearance are both important. Common applications include offices, schools, healthcare facilities, hotels, government buildings, multifamily common areas, and other finished interior spaces. Commercial wood doors are engineered products rather than residential stile-and-rail doors, and they can be specified with different cores, veneers, laminates, hardware preparations, glazing, and fire ratings to suit the opening.

What core options are available for commercial wood doors?

Common core options for commercial wood doors include particleboard, structural composite lumber, stave lumber, and mineral core for higher fire ratings. Each construction serves a different purpose. Particleboard is a practical general-purpose commercial core, SCL and stave cores are selected where added structural performance is desired, and mineral cores are used in many 45-, 60-, and 90-minute fire-rated wood doors. Core selection should be coordinated with door size, hardware, fire rating, and manufacturer limitations.

What surface materials and veneers are available on commercial wood doors?

Commercial wood doors can be faced with paint-grade hardboard or MDO, high-pressure decorative laminate, and a broad range of natural wood veneers. Common veneer species include birch, red oak, white oak, maple, cherry, mahogany, and walnut, with cut options such as rotary, plain sliced, and rift cut. The surface should be chosen for the design intent, finish, matching requirements, maintenance expectations, and project budget rather than appearance alone.

Can commercial wood doors be fire rated?

Yes. Many commercial wood doors are available with 20-, 45-, 60-, or 90-minute fire ratings, depending on the core, size, veneer or face material, hardware, and the manufacturer’s listing. Higher-rated wood doors commonly use mineral cores. Fire-rated glass, louvers, pairs, and certain hardware applications have additional listing limitations. The door rating should always be coordinated with the frame, hardware, glazing, and the required rating of the complete opening.

Can commercial wood doors be ordered with glass or louvers?

Yes. Vision lites and louvers are available on many commercial wood door constructions. Glass is commonly used for visibility and borrowed light, while louvers serve ventilation needs in utility and service spaces. The allowable size and location depend on the door construction and, for fire-rated doors, the applicable fire listing. Because machining a wood door affects the face, core, and internal blocking, glass and louver requirements should ideally be specified before the door is manufactured.

Can commercial wood doors be factory prepared for commercial hardware?

Yes. Commercial wood doors can be machined for cylindrical or mortise locks, exit devices, hinges, closers, electrified hardware, and other commercial hardware when the construction supports the required preparation. Factory machining is especially useful for solid core doors because hardware locations, edge construction, blocking, and fire-rating restrictions can be coordinated in advance. For replacement doors, exact hinge and lock locations should be taken from the existing frame or door rather than assumed.

What is the difference between veneer and laminate commercial wood doors?

Wood veneer provides the natural grain, color variation, and architectural character of real wood, while high-pressure decorative laminate provides a consistent manufactured surface in a wide range of colors, woodgrains, and patterns. Veneer is often selected for higher-end interiors and projects where species and grain matching matter. Laminate is frequently chosen for high-use interiors where consistency, cleanability, and design flexibility are priorities. Both can be used over commercial solid core constructions, subject to the selected door series and rating.

Can commercial wood doors be ordered in custom sizes?

Yes. Commercial wood doors are available in standard and custom dimensions, although maximum width, height, pair size, glass cutouts, and fire ratings vary by construction and manufacturer. Custom sizing is common in renovation work, architectural projects, and openings designed around specific hardware or elevations. When requesting a custom door, provide the actual leaf size or clearly identify the measurement type, along with thickness, handing, hardware preparation, frame information, and any required rating.

Are commercial wood doors suitable for exterior openings?

Most architectural commercial wood doors are primarily intended for interior applications unless the specific door construction is designed and warranted for exterior exposure. Moisture, direct weather, temperature swings, and finish maintenance can affect wood-door performance. When an exterior wood appearance is required, confirm that the door series, core, adhesive system, face material, edges, finish, and warranty are approved for that exposure. For severe exterior conditions, a metal or stainless steel door may be the more practical commercial solution.

What affects the price of commercial wood doors?

Pricing for commercial wood doors depends on size, core, face material or veneer, factory finish, fire rating, glass or louver cutouts, hardware machining, edge details, matching requirements, and quantity. Custom veneers, oversized doors, higher fire ratings, special machining, and coordinated pairs generally add cost compared with a standard unfinished door. The most useful quote compares the complete required scope, including frame and hardware when needed, because a lower door-only price can disappear once the rest of the opening is added.
